ABIGAIL TALLY SERIES

An Eye for Magic

Main Characters

Abigail Tally

Born as heir Duchess Abigail Tully the only daughter to the rightful Duke of Tullents, Abigail was demoted to Viscountess Abigail Tally of Hilshire when her father died at the hands of his brother Ricard. She is the ward of her uncle, Duke Julian Tully.

Abigail grew up sequestered in the Tullents Castle, playing with her young nieces Erika and Melody, and taking lessons on aristocratic decorum. She developed a stutter after her parents died when she was six, and at the same time she started seeing things that weren't visible to others.

All her life, she's suffered from a sense of inadequacy. She is constantly trying to live up to her uncles expectations - and failing.

After she joins the Mages Guild, Abigail shares a room with Jessica Vanderly and spends her spare time with Olivia Carter. The girls are fast friends, and very supportive.

Abigail is apprenticed to Master Damien Fawler, and goes sleuthing with him on cases that come up while he is working with the Lind District City Guard. Her powers are vital to figuring out the culprit in a series of murders that the guard are investigating.

Abigail's magic is a gift of a piece of godhood from the goddess of space and time. She experiences the world as if she were a god. She can see truth, magic, and the elementals of the world. Because her powers are a Gift, she can't 'turn them off' and is constantly trying to separate the mortal world from the spiritual. She has made friends with city spirits, talked with gods, and explored the inner workings of magic beyond what others can perceive.

Her favourite pastimes include reading, sight seeing, people watching, playing with her younger cousins, making up fun stories, and thinking sassy thoughts she wished she was brave enough to say allowed.

Master Damien Fawler

Damien Fawler is a mysterious and snarky Master Mage with sight magic who is registered with the Tullents City Mages Guild and works for the Lind District City Watch. Not many people like him because he is incredibly rude and constantly bickers with everyone. Despite this, he treates his apprentice Abigail with respect, only teasing her a little bit.

Damien first arrived in Tullents about 10 years ago when he surprised everyone by helping in the case of a nobleman who was kidnapping and murdering young children. After his assistance capturing Lord Hartlik, the Lind District Guard accepted him as a consultant and he's been working cases in and around the city ever since.

No one knows how old Damien is, or where he came from. He also doesn't stay in the city often. He leaves in the fall and returns in the spring every years, stating a distaste for the damp cold winters on the south coast.

Damien has a penchance for getting stabbed. His snarky commentary and work with the city guard mean that he has a line up of people who don't like him - and he's had his fair share of assination attempts.

He is also a highly acclaimed Master Mage, who has worked in many prestigious positions across the Kingdom of Iirya.

Tullents Castle

Duke Julian Tully

Julian Tully was born the middle child of three brothers. His older brother, Arthur, was the friends adventurous type. His younger brother, Ricard, was bullheaded and cruel. Julian was the studious and serious brother.

Growing up, Arthur was the heir and spend a lot of time in lessons on how to be a political figure head. Julian studied with the ministry and spend a lot of his time between the Tullents University and the Castle Ministry. Ricard took up fencing and joined the army. Despite their busy schedules, the brothers were close. They spent their summers together, and tried to get together as often as they could.

Julian married the Magistrates daughter, Lady Celia Holgrove, and their daughers Erica and Melany were born two years later. His son Charles were born a year after, and his children all lived with their older cousin Abigail in the family nursary rooms in the castle.

Everying changed the year that Charles were born. Ricard decided that there were too many people between him and becoming the duke, and he lead a rebelling to kill Arthur and Julian and thier children. Carina and Arthur died defending against Ricard in the nursary - and Julian arrived too late to save them.

Out of nowhere, Julian became the duke and stepped into the role of ruler and father figure for his tramatized family and niece. Within the year, Abigail was behaving strangely and was caught talking to things that weren't there... and his son died of sudden infant death syndrome a few months later.

From the ashes of grief and death, Julian decided that he would raise Abigail to take back her rightful place as the Duchess of Tullents - and proceded to put so much pressure on the girl that just pushed them farther and farther apart.

Duchess Celia Tully

Lady Celia Holgrove, daughter of the Lord Magistrate, had a crush on Julian Tully from the moment she laid eyes on him apprenticed in her fathers department. From that first day, she changed her entire lifes plan. She cut off talks with prospective suitors, she hired a tutor to help catch her up to speed on popular literature, and she went out and bought a brand new dress.

Her courtship was almost one sided, because Julian had no idea that he was already caught. Celia convinced her father, and Julian's father, and won over the Duchess and spent a good six months laying the ground work before she organized some happenstance meetings with Julian while he was working in the office.

And she married him. Her wits and humor and loyalty quickly won over Julian. He wasn't anticipating a love match - but through sheer force of fate he got one. Julian adored his wife, and they had three children. Celia had a difficult labor with Charles, who was born earlier than expected, and was told they might never have children again.

Celia was in recovery when the rebellion happened, she picked herself up and left bed rest to be with her husband, working tirelessly to help support him in his grief. Tragedy struck when they lost Charles, and buried themselves in paperwork and learning how to suddenly take on Arthur and Carina's jobs.

Celia loves Abigail, and knows that Julian is hoping to make Abigail the next Duchess. She tries as she can to help, but knows that a combination of physical limitations and long standing grief and trauma make it hard for Abigail to fully open up to her.

Knight Commander Warrick Brenson

Sir Warrick Brenson was elevated to the position on Knight Commander upon the death of his father, Sir Jeremi Brenson, during the Ricard rebellion.

Sir Warrick loved his father, and looked up to him. He respected his and held great pride at the fact that his family has been the head guard for every duke of Tullents dating back eight generations. He was not expecting to take the position as early as he did, and he was not expecting that it would be the very family he swore to protect that would be the cause of his fathers death.

Sir Warrick respected Duke Julian, so he focused all his angry and gried on the surviving Abigail Tally. His father died protecting her, and she grew up as an embarrassment to the entire Tullents line. She was crazy, and stuttered, and reminded Warrick every day that his amazing father was gone so that this young girl could still be here.

Sir Warrick's inner struggles came to a head when he overheard Duke Julian talking with his wife about returning the title to Abigail, and making her the heir after she came of age. Afterwards, he did everything in his power to make it known to all that she was not worthy.

He would do his duty to keep her alive, but he would no longer bite his tongue. To this day, he still despises the young girl... and probably always will.

Lady Pam Nels

Head lady-in-waiting and maid for the daughters and ward of the Tullents Duchy. Pam might have been from a noble family, but her parents died when she was very young, leaving her destitute. She lived for five years in the rougher parts of the city after she was turned out as a child, but survived by reading and selling the newspaper.

When she was going to be apprenticed, she caught the eye of the Lord Magistrate Holgrove, who remembered her father and didn't realize what had happened to the family he left behind. The Lord Magistrate apprenticed her to his own household and she grew up waiting on Lady Celia. Despite her lower accent, for which Pam doesn't care to correct because it constantly makes people underrestimate her AND she's perfectly willing to fade into the background, Lady Celia brought her as one of her trusted aids into the castle. She too was not anticipating to be put in such a high position of power, but when Lady Celia became the Duchess, Lady Pam was promoted as well.

Tullents City Mages Guild

Guild Master Hansen Ulrik

Hansen Ulrik has been the Guild Master for 30 years, and is hoping to retire in the next 10 years. He is a Master Mage who specialized in Support Strategic Analysis - or some other fancy words that just mean his powers all focus around enhancing the abilities of those around him.

He can look at a person, and if he focuses his magic on that person, he gets an understanding of what that person needs to shine. "That person is best with a bow", "That person needs to learn from that master", "That person shouldn't be allowed to do that job or they will fail.". But the time he was a Journeyman, he was already being primed to take on the Guild Master position.

Hans has always had to push to get people where they need to be, and a few times he's had to get in trouble to do it - as is the case when he here's about and meets Abigail for the first time.

Duke Julian sent him a short warning that his niece - the one everyone says is crazy - would be attending his guild for testing in the near future... and Hans immediately summoned Damien to come see him as well as all of the Masters in the guild. He knew that others couldn't see the forth orb normally - it had an enchantment on it to keep it hidden because problems searching for Gifted mages two hundred years back left behind a terrible fear in the magic society that continued in silly rules to this day.

Hans knew that he needed everyone who could make to appear and witness the testing of Abigail, and even if nothing became of it then having the prestigue of the guild present wouldn't be a bad political move while testing the dukes neice.

Things started to go sidewise the second the girl walked into his office. He KNEW. He knew that she couldn't go back to the castle, that what she needed was right here in his guild... and he made the choice that would put him in a terribly awkward position for years to come.

He doesn't regret it.

Master York Allen

Master York is an ice mage who was travelling home from a trip in Parnam when he stopped in at the Tullent's Mages Guild and never left.

He was a journeyman at the time, and decided to make money by using his ice powers in the southern desert Kingdom. He met Master Eian and travelled with the man for a while before inviting him back to visit Iirya.

When Master York walked into the Tullents Mages Guild that day, he saw the most beautiful and lovely human he had ever met - Lucy Mills. After a very short discussion with Master Eian that amounted to 'I'm staying here', the two men joined the Tullents Guild and have York has worked there ever since.

Shortly after that, Lucy apprenticed to Master Eian to learn advanced Healing Magic, and York finished his studies independantly. York was originally from the Capital of Iirya, and studied at the Capital City University.

He became a Master Mage first, when he turned 35. Master Ulrik showed up the next day with a very young Tamitha Greene for York to train. He was not ready.

Tamitha had incredibly powerful ice magic, far more powerful than his own, and he spend all his time trying to figure out a way to help her get over a long time depression that consumed her. Despite his best efforts, Tamitha died by commiting suicide when she let her powers destroy her.

After that, York didn't know what to do. He spent three years losing himself in work, and two years trying to find his way again. Lucy, who became a master mage quite early, was the only thing giving him purpose. Unfortunately, he was terrible at courting and so their relationship reached a state where it was more bicker than flirting.

When York met Jess, he realized that maybe he needed to try again. Jess is nothing like Tamitha, and with any luck she can get him out of his comfort zone and back into a life of adventure and travel and excitement. He can help her fulfill her dreams by rekindling his own.

Master Lucy Mills

Lucy Mills has a terrible secret that she can't tell anyone - she isn't a healing mage.

Oh, she can heal people alright... but her true affinity is with death itself. When she was three or four years old, Lucy had a strange and wonderful nightmare. It showed her saving people, killing people, and walking a path between life and death. When she woke up, her eye colour changed to red and one of her eyes started to see aura's around the people she met.

These aura's gave her a sense of each person's lifespan and health. With enough practice, she learned that should could siphon off peoples life energy and give it to others. She couldn't 'heal' a broken arm, but she could set a broken arm and then give it a bit of life energy to fix itself.

People died all the time, and Lucy as a healer was brought to a lot of sick or elderly patients who's time was drawing nearer. When she was sure that the person wasn't going to live much longer, she was simply take their lifes power so that she could use it for the betterment of others.

Master Eian probably guessed she wasn't what she said she was - but he never pushed her for answers.

Before she met York and Eian... Lucy had travelled a fair bit herself. She didn't want to be reminded of the lifes she took and so she didn't WANT to stay in one place. But that changed in Tullents. She liked having Eian as a teacher... and she really liked York.

Lucy and Yorks relationship changed with Tamitha came. Lucy KNEW. She knew and she couldn't convince York to give up on his apprentice. The guilt that followed Lucy, the grief that followed York, made them uncertain how they were going to go forward. She so wanted to persure York - sure he was older, but she LIKED him. Lucy, she might admit to herself, loved him. But she can't be with him until he knows what she truly is... and she's too afraid to try.

They were just starting to get back into each others company when Abigail and Jess arrived.

Journeywoman Helena Umbrath

Helena was the tallest person in Pine Hollow before she was twelve. There just were not a lot of anyone over six feet in the small village, and her lumberjack father from the north left behind a legacy in her height.

When Helena was thirteen, she started experiencing weird feelings every time she tried to do her chores. Like she was doing the wrong, or like she was using the wrong hand. Eventually, she and everyone else figured out it was magic when all the spice containers floated up and chased her around the room.

There was one mage in Pine Hollow, a young woman named Anetha who had the ability to transform into marsh animals. The woman spent a week trying to guide Helena and when that didn't work, they shipped her off to Tullents to see about finding a better teacher at the official Mages Guild headquarters in Tullents.

There she apprenticed to Heather Shardis, a very very old stitchwitch who helped with the laundry. Helena spent most of her time running errands and cleaning the guild alone... until Brock arrived. Brock was short, slightly heavy, and the quiet type. And Helena liked him as a great friend immediately. He took on most of the kitchen work and she helped with cleaning and running the bar. She likes to think that she had a crush on Brock before his growth spurt that left her finally looking up at someone... but all the same she's madly in love with him and trying to figure out what to do next.

Journeyman Brock Manse

Brock really likes to cook. His powers started whenever he poured drinks at his parents pub - and people started to notice when he served a soup that proved to be the perfect hang over cure.

He joined with a few other apprentices, but mostly ended up working alongside the tall and sweet Helena. What a woman. Not that she'd ever look at him of course, and they were just friends so he had no reason to muck up a good thing by going anywhere inappropriate.

Brock happily makes food for everyone in the back and chats mostly with Helena and Nari, the woman in charge of laundry. He is very content.

Apprentice Olivia Carter

Olivia was born the eldest daughter of a candlestick marker, and she was very depressed. Physical labour bored her to tears, and so she would spend endless hours asking herself questions and making up exciting tales to share with her three younger siblings.

Everything changed when she got magic. Suddenly, her hands started itching violently and nothing she did could stop it. The build up was intense, and she scratched her hands to bleeding to try and quell the feeling of itchiness that overwhelmed her.

By the time she picked up a pen to mark the number of candles they had made at end of day, the power had build up so much that the ink flew out and wrote all the candle information into the air in front of her. The pen continued to write long after the ink ran out, and Olivia's family promptly sent her off to the guild.

Olivia is an avid reader, and she is living her best life apprenticed to the Mages Guild. She has no intention of ever leaving.

Apprentice Jessica Vanderly

Jess is the youngest daughter of a city courier and a washerwoman. She is incredibly light hearted and grew up surrounded by her many excitable brothers.

One hot summer day, Jess sneezed so hard she blew over a carriage. Lady Luck, it was parked and didn't have anyone inside it. After that she was sent off to the Mages Guild in Tullents to get tested for magic.

If Jess were being honest, she'd felt connected to the weather for a long time before that.

Jess always knew when a storm was coming, or when it was going to snow. Her friends teased her and her family loved her.

Despite a not so small amount of homesickness, Jess is determined to have her own adventure. She loves being York's apprentice because he is often sent out around the Farmlands to help with water shortages and he takes her everywhere.

With her new friends at the Guild, and her travelling master mage, Jess is busy having fun.
